Cumulate Draw – online tool to replace Visio
written on Nov.05, 2006
There aren’t that many Visio replacements available on the net. I wrote about the alternative Gliffy earlier, but there’s another alternative called Cumulate Draw.
At the moment, you don’t have to register to start drawing, you just press “draw” and it starts. You cannot store files on their servers but you open/save to your local harddrive.
Compared to Gliffy, it doesn’t rely on Flash and allows you to save all your work locally in SVG, JPG, PNG, PDF, and editable formats. It’s not as powerful as Gliffy and doesn’t have as many symbols but it haven’t been around for so long so make sure to check back often!
Oh and by the way, it’s open source! You can download the source and put it on your own servers.

I am using a lot of webbased software. But apps like visio or gliffy aren’t apps I personally need or use. But reporting on my site, http://www.web2weblog.com requires e to check out a lot of stuff, and I have to say gliffy for instance works pretty well.

I don’t know if it’s a good idea to unistall all of the desktop applications but some might be a good idea, especially to bad these couldn’t run on a network.

Gliffy’s interface is really slick. That shows you what you can get with Flash over Ajax–I understand it’s implemented in OpenLaszlo, which generates Flash. I tried using Gliffy to make a graphic for a project I was working on and I ran into so many bugs that I couldn’t finish.

What a shame – cumulative draw is no longer open source – it was bought by autodesk – only one of the biggest names in CAD. So much for that.. Next!

It’s a shame that this tool no longer works. Gliffy was the first to enter the web based diagramming field but there are many more players in this niche. I suggest you check out Creately as your Visio alternative. It has real-time collaboration compared to Gliffy and it has many more templates to get started quickly as well.

Thanks for the post but unfortunately it doesn’t look like Cumulate Draw is even still around! But the tools today continue to get more impressive.
I’m currently using Lucidchart as my Visio editor. I can import a Microsoft Visio file from a client, edit it, export it back to Visio and then send it back to the client. And the client never knows that I don’t have Visio! :)
