Thanks for sharing your toughts! Yes - it will definitly be interesting see if the web evolution will catch up to the desktop technology. One of the later cases is Outlook. Outlook 2007 client has evolved tremendously compared to 2003. But the Outlook Web Access part hasn't (if you want my personal opinion) evolved as much. So it will be interesting to see future services out there.

I agree with you on that companies probably won't go online - since they want to keep their information private and secured. But I wonder if Google will start offering a "Google Docs server for your company" just as they offer the Google Searchengine to install within your organization. That way the companies feel better when they host their data in-house.

I do agree that online tools are getting better and better and in 2, 5, or 10 years almost everything the author wants will be possible. It will definitely be possible to do a ton of stuff online, period.

However, the desktop is not going to sit by idle. It will always be ahead of the online environment, but requires a more tech savy person and troubleshooting. Small companies may start to go online office environments for cost savings, but I think many larger companies will still maintain their own systems for security reasons.

So I believe the hype, but with limits. The desktop isn’t going anywhere, and don’t forget that the browser is a fairly complex desktop application itself. And to make all this web2.0 stuff work you need java, javascript and lots of other plugins inside the browser, which runs inside the os of the desktop.
