Web Desktop
September 3, 2006 at 10:47 amUninstalled desktop? What do you mean by that? You have to have your desktop to get it work!
Well - maybe not. Since I’m looking for having everything online - why do I need an installed Operating System? All I really need is a web browser and an Internet connection. So I think it’s a little bit overkill to have a fully featured PC installed. As I see it there are several ways this could be solved:
- Virtual Appliance (aka VMware Player running a Virtual Appliance) - you need Windows or Linux to run the VMware player so maybe you’re better of simply using the webbrowser in the host system? Well it’s still an option. Who knows, in the future you might find hosting firms who offer VMware player capabilities or maybe some hardware appliances running VMware Player
- Virtual Desktop - There are services out there who offer you a desktop “published on the net”
- Hardware Appliances - Is there any? Well all you acutally need is a small device with Ethernet/WLAN, mouse, keyboard, monitor running nothing but a webbrowser
Future will tell what new solutions will come. This category will look into those kind of solutions.
